Q. I have a JØTUL wood burning stove.
Does your DVD address the operation of my stove?
A. You will learn how to operate your particular brand of wood stove based on the information on the DVD. All of the latest EPA rated stoves operate with a single air control and all work in a similar fashion. It's the visual clues of a fire that allow you to control the proper burn rate. Whether you use a JØTUL, Quadrafire, Vermont Castings, Regency, Hearthstone, or other brand of wood stove, we show you visually what to look for in controlling the fire in your stove.
Q. What format is your DVD, (NTSC or PAL)?
A. Currently an NTSC version (US, Canadian, and other countries) is available that plays in all regions. If you are interested in a PAL version (Europe) please email us. If enough interest is shown, we will produce a PAL version.
Q. Is it safe to burn softwood?
A. In the Northeastern US, where hardwoods and softwoods are plentiful, there is a general belief that softwoods are dangerous to burn due to their pitch and tar content. If you have a choice, burn hardwoods. You'll work a lot less in harvesting, stacking and tending your fire, and clean less ash as well. You'll enjoy a long sustaining fire with hardwood that has twice the heat output of softwood.
But there are parts of this country and the world where only softwood is available, and the only choice for wood heating fuel. So, softwood is used. Poland, for example, has a lot of pine, and it is readily used for firewood.
Will softwood create more creosote in your chimney?
I have researched this topic extensively and have found that creosote formation has more to do with the style of woodburning and the amount of smoke that is present in the chimney rather than the type of wood that is burned. This DVD addresses this topic thoroughly.
Q. What kind of tool are you using in the sharpening section
of the Goody Box?
A. The sharpening jig is available through your local STIHL dealer, and it is called the "Bar Mount Filing Tool".
